The Perfect Base, pt. 1

“Beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin”

The most important step for a beautiful, long-lasting makeup application, is the skincare routine. The skin needs to be clean and prepped for the makeup.

Step 1: Know your skin type.
– In the skincare world, there are about a million products to choose between, so it is important to know your skin type and go for products that are specifically made for your skin type.
But every skin is different. And if you have, for example, oily skin, there is no guarantee that a product for oily skin (which works wonders for someone you know with oily skin) is going to work for you. So give it time, try one product at a time for weeks, a month maybe. Do not try multiple products at once, since it will only irritate your skin and may cause breakouts.

Step 2: Remove old makeup.

– It is very important to remove your makeup at night. Because the skin repairs itself at night while you sleep, so makeup can clog your pores and not allow your skin to breathe. So invest in a good makeup remover. It makes everything so much easier!
For me, it is very important to have a good makeup remover/micellar water. It will just melt away your makeup and you are ready to cleanse your skin.

Step 3: Cleanse.

– Now your skin is ready to be cleansed. If you don’t have a makeup remover, I would recommend that you double cleanse: once to get rid of some of the makeup, dirt, and some of the bacteria and pollutants (which cause your skin to age) and the second cleanse will remove residue left behind, excess makeup, and it will actually be able to penetrate your skin and remove toxins and clear away old skin cells. If it’s not all thoroughly washed away, it can lead to clogged pores, blackheads, and eventually breakouts.
Your cleanser should be for your skin type and not too harsh, since it should be used every night and every morning. It is important to take your time; massage the cleanser gently onto your skin for about a minute and rinse. Remember to always pat dry your face (not drag) with a CLEAN towel so you don’t spread bacteria.

Step 4: Skin tonic and moisturizer.

– I use a skin tonic on a cotton pad and use it all over my face. A skin tonic will close your pores. (the pores are being opened while you cleanse you face) Then I moisturize with a gel moisturizer since I have oily/combo skin, so a regular moisturizer will be too heavy and greasy for me.
If you use some kind of a face oil in your skin routine then remember to always moisturize your face first, before going in with your face oil. Face oil directly onto your skin after it is cleansed actually does more harm than good – it will clog your pores and cause break-outs.

Step 5: Face masks.

– This step may not be a “every day step”, but 1-2 times a week it is important to use a face mask for your skin type. (Although some masks are safe to use every day) Just be careful to not irritate your skin with too many products at once. If you are in your mid 20s, your skin starts to turn more slowly, meaning that dead skin cells build up and your becomes prone to discoloration and loses its elasticity and glow. So choose a good collagen mask to use once in a while.
